Hoboken, this is pretty prettttty big news. The Tribeca Film Festival, yes THE Tribeca Film Festival, presented by AT&T, will open its 19th edition on April 15th — and is expanding its reach and events to HOBOKEN. Yes, that would be Hoboken, New Jersey is hosting some of the Tribeca Film Festival’s events in our little one-square-mile city. And as their local media partner, we are so excited to spill the tea on this big-time event happening over the span of two weeks in April.

Last year, Tribeca’s opening night brought The Apollo uptown to its namesake theater in Harlem, and this year, the Festival will continue to use cinematic storytelling to connect communities across the Hudson River in Hoboken.

And before you say, “Why Hoboken?” — a few movie scenes shot in the Mile Square that build on our city’s rich cinematic history include On the Waterfront, Julie & Julia, Funny Girl, The Station Agent, among others {click here for a list of a few we rounded up}.

“We are incredibly thrilled to bring the renowned Tribeca Film Festival to Hoboken,” said Mayor Ravi Bhalla, in a press release sent by Tribeca Film Festival to Hoboken Girl. “There’s no better location to host the Festival than our Mile Square, offering a wealth of culture with our local artists, galleries, and The Mile Square Theatre Company, and further cements our City as one of the major cultural destinations in the tri-state area.”

About the Tribeca Film Festival

The Tribeca Film Festival brings artists and diverse audiences together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms, including film, TV, VR, gaming, music, and online work. With strong roots in independent film, Tribeca is a platform for creative expression and immersive entertainment. The Festival champions emerging and established voices; discovers award-winning filmmakers and creators; curates innovative experiences; and introduces new technology and ideas through premieres, exhibitions, talks, and live performances.

The Festival was founded by Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff in 2001 to spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan following the attacks on the World Trade Center.

“As filmmakers, we were inspired to create the Tribeca Film Festival after 9/11 because we believe in the power of art to restore community and inspire change,” the founders shared in a press release to Hoboken Girl.

Now in its 19th year, the Festival has evolved into a destination for creativity that reimagines the cinematic experience and explores how art can unite communities. The 19th annual edition will take place April 15th-26th, 2020, and you can learn more about the events that are happening, including Hoboken events, here.

🎥 Hoboken, this is HUGE news 🎥 THE @tribeca Film Festival is expanding across the river to the Mile Square, and as a local media partner for the festival happening in April, we are sharing the exclusive 🎊 | link in bio for all we know, and the celeb spottings you *may* see around the area

“It’s wonderful to embrace new audiences with our neighbor across the river,” said Rosenthal about hosting some of the events in Hoboken.

As one of Tribeca Film Festival’s local media partners, we will keep you posted on the events {and celeb spottings!} that may go down in Hoboken, of course. We are so excited!

Besides a casual water main break happening every now and again {le sigh – with the most recent occurring on Saturday morning between 13th and Willow}, this area has seen much expansion and development {and probably as the potential cause x cold weather for said break} from major brands and anchor businesses. These new spots include the likes of Orale {which expanded its second location to Hoboken after much success in JC}, Trader Joe’s, West Elm, The Gravity Vault, SLT, the newly-opened bwè kafe x Little City books collaboration, plus more.

The Schedule of Events

The Tribeca events schedule is TBD as are the locations of various events, but there will definitely be a performance by music legend Willie Nelson and others at the Beacon Theatre, as well as a documentary showcase called Jimmy Carter Rock & Roll President, directed by Mary Wharton {who won the 2004 Grammary Award for Best Music Film for her documentary feature Sam Cooke: Legend}. The rockumentary is produced by Chris Farrell and written by Bill Flanagan. The documentary catalogs the role of popular music in helping to propel a peanut farmer from Georgia all the way to the White House. This rockumentary-style presidential portrait shows how Jimmy Carter’s lifelong passion for music gave him an unexpected edge as a presidential candidate.

“The film accurately captures my love for all music and the importance music has played in my personal and professional life. I remain hopeful and believe that music can serve to bring us together as a nation. Rosalynn and I are pleased with the fine film Mary and Chris have made and thank all those involved for telling this story. We are thrilled that it will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival,” said President Jimmy Carter.

Tribeca is also partnering with Democracy Works and Civic Alliance, America’s premier nonpartisan coalition of businesses working together to build a future where everyone can vote, volunteer, and take action to shape the country. Tribeca Film Festival audiences will be given access to online tools that make voting easy; sending them text updates and educating them about ways to get involved in their local elections.

All passes and ticket packages are on sale now. Single tickets to attend the Festival go on sale on March 17th, 2020.
